Professor Brian Cheffins

Professor Brian Cheffins has since 1998 been the S.J. Berwin Professor of Corporate Law at Cambridge University, Trinity Hall.  He is currently Director of the Cambridge Law Faculty’s Centre for Corporate and Commercial Law and Director of Law Faculty’s Master of Corporate Law program, which was launched in 2012.

Professor Cheffins began his academic career at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law, where he taught from 1986 to 1997.  Professor Cheffins has held visiting appointments at:

• Duke
• Harvard
• Oxford
• Stanford
• the University of British Columbia and
• the University of Western Ontario

He was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2002 and is currently a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute.  He is the author of:

• Company Law:  Theory, Structure and Operation (1997)
• The Trajectory of (Corporate Law) Scholarship (2004)
• Corporate Ownership and Control:  British Business Transformed (2008)

and is the editor of The Modern History of U.S. Corporate Governance (2011).

Professor Cheffins has also written numerous articles on corporate law and corporate governance, with three since 2007 having been voted as one of the top 10 Corporate and Securities articles in annual surveys of teachers in corporate and securities law conducted by the Corporate Practice Commentator.

Professor Cheffins received his B.A. and LL.B from the University of Victoria in Canada and completed his LLM at the University of Cambridge in 1986.  He was a member of the Bar of British Columbia in Canada from 1985 until 2010.
